Specifying Your Rights
G2C2, has been developed to encourage educators to share resources which will further the genetics and genomics knowledge of health care professionals. As an educator you are encouraged to submit to G2C2, so that your work can be shared. We use the creative commons licensing to allow you, the author, to specify what rights you keep for your work. Here is a 7 minute video that reviews the copyright concept and how the creative commons licensing complements traditional copyright restrictions.
To review, work is copyrighted as soon as it is created. By default all rights are reserved for the creator or creator’s employer unless assigned elsewhere. For example, journals generally require you to assign them the copyright for your published work.
The creative commons license allows you to reserve only some, rather than all rights. You decide whether your work can be used for derivative works, for commercial use and how you should be credited. These conditions can be combined to create several unique licenses. We recommend that you view http://creativecommons.org/about/license/ which describes the license terms in detail. In the G2C2 resource submission process, authors will be asked to choose one of these license combinations to apply to their work.
Other important points to note: if your work contains copyrighted material, you must respect the conditions of that copyright whether it is a creative commons license, a normal copyright license, or contains no copyright notice in which case the normal copyright license is implied. Obtaining any necessary copyright permissions is the responsibility of the contributor to G2C2. If you have additional questions you may wish to consult the relevant legal representatives at your institution.
